Several weeks ago I saw an "Elitist for Obama" while surfing the internets. Nice idea, I thought, but it needed to be pushed a little further (you can take the girl out of advertising, but not the advertising out of the girl!). So I designed my very first Obama pin. I used my skills as a calligrapher to express elitism at its fanciest. I used a rigid steel nib with an oblique pen holder. I wrote the words and flourish in gold-tone ink (I don't think it's really gold) on navy blue paper.
I sold quite a few of these buttons at South End Open Studios. It was quite interesting listening to people explain what it meant -- especially to children. How do you explain "elitist"? Why is it funny? I noticed quite a few people coming to my studio because they had seen someone wearing my pin and wanted to know where they got it.
I'm amazed at the variety of Obama pins. Crafts. Posters. Art. You name it. There is something about Barack Obama's candidacy that is so inspiring that it unleashes the creativity in so many people. And it's not just professional artists: it's anybody who can embroider, quilt, knit, crochet, decoupage, potato print, etc. Even more examples here. The support for McCain/Palin is obviously strong but I don't see the same creative outpouring from their supporters. Maybe somebody can point me to some websites/blogs? I'd love to see what they make.
